Lets Examine Movements Like #METOO #TIMESUP & #MUTERKELLY

The METOO movement was created in 2006 by founder

Tarana Burke to help survivors of sexual violence find pathways to healing.

The movement targeted young women and mostly black women of low wealth communities.

The movement went mainstream when celebrities took to express sexual harassment stories on the platform and united with the METOO cause.

These celebrities that opened up and shared included Alyssa Milano, Reese Witherspoon, America Ferrera, Jennifer Lawrence, Molly Ringwald, Gabrielle Union, and many more.

Then the many celebrities that were sexual harassed by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein came out against him and used the METOO movement as a stage and inspiration to speak out.

These celebrities included Rose McGowan, Asia Argento,

Gwyneth Paltrow, Mira Sorvino, Angelina Jolie, Heather Graham, Ashley Judd, and many more.
Over sixty women also came out using METOO in reporting Bill Cosby's past acts of sexual harassment.

Gabriella Union wrote on her IG
"Reminder. I got raped at work at a payless shoe store. I had on a long tunic and leggings.
So miss me with dress modestly shit."

America Ferrera shared her story of sexual harassment and then wrote.

"Ladies, lets break the silence so the next generation of girls won't have to live with this bullshit."

Times up was originally founded as an initiative to eliminate gender inequality at the workplace and it pushed further to help women in low income neighborhoods to combat on the job sexual harassment.

#TIMESUP evolved when Hollywood celebrities in response to Harvey Weinstein and the #METOO movement had more than 300 women in film, television, and theater co sign a letter reporting three decades of sexual misconduct on Harvey Weinstein.
The letter detailed the mission of the METOO movement.

TIMESUP stands for times up on silence, on waiting, and on tolerating discrimination, harassment and abuse.

This is a movement to mute R Kelly, a worldwide call to mute his voice due to the twenty five years of sexual misconduct reports against him.

The co founders are Oronike Odeleye and Kenyette Tisha Barnes.

On the website muterkelly.org you can find many pressing questions such as why aren't the parents to blame?
Why do white men get away with things like this all the time?
I believe these are questions for fans, people who still don't believe R. Kelly is a predator or who don't see why he is being targeted. I actually was surprised at some of the questions and the fact that they needed to be answered. The website also includes petitions to sign, concert dates and mailing lists.

The movement has made a difference, Dallas stations K104 & KRNB banned playing his music.
95.1 and 105.7 has banned his music also, and it looks as though lots of others are on board to dropping his tunes as well.
R. Kelly's own label Sony has drop him.
With celebrities like Chance the rapper and Lady Gaga pulling music collaborations and even John Legend and others speaking out on the series it looks pretty serious at this point.

Project Islamic Hope President Najee Ali and L.A Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Oferi Hutching are urging I Heart radio and Radio One to stop playing R. Kelly's music.
Also Cook County State Attorney held a conference in Chicago to encourage victims to come forward to tell their stories.
It's no surprise a entire movement has been created to take R. Kelly down and it is well over due.

I have to say I'm really proud of these movements, women have to speak out without any fears. As the  mother of a future woman I'm happy to know my daughter has strong women to look up to in society. There is so much stigma behind sexual harassment, "was she fast, how was she dressed, maybe she was looking for it."

Times are changing now and people can no longer stand behind these false beliefs.

I always believe whats done in the dark will come to the light. Speaking out can save someone from going through the same, now we can catch these men before it becomes twenty five years.
Now with all this help, girls and women can bring their story to the light, before it gets dark for someone else.

Until next time...
